Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu changes tune on Covid-19 with two major announcements

After months of downplaying the Covid-19 pandemic, the Tanzanian government has finally accepted the seriousness of the situation with a bold announcement.

Delving into the matter, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu announced that the country will declare its official position on the matter soon, but it will depend on what experts say.

President Suluhu stated that Tanzania cannot exist in isolation, ignoring what is going on in the world.

She added that at the same time, Tanzania cannot consume foreign information without analyzing and verifying.

‘We will form a committee of experts to tell us how the situation is and what the world is advising us to do. We cannot isolate ourselves like an island and we cannot receive what is being brought to us without analysing it and doing our research,” Suluhu said.

This is a sharp shift from the position held by her predecessor, the late former President John Pombe Magufuli.

The Tanzanian head of state made the remarks at State House House in Dar es Salaam during the swearing in ceremony of newly appointed government officials.

The East African Nation last updated its Covid-19 records in May 2020 before then President Magufuli declared the country cleared of Covid-19 by the grace of God.

She also directed state authorities to lift the ban on all media houses that had been banned by her predecessor for breaking laws relating to Covid-19.

Suluhu said that the media should be allowed to exercise its freedom but should also do so as per the regulations governing them.
