Deputy President William Ruto’s camp is staring at a financial crisis ahead of 2022 elections after a host of billionaires dumped his bandwagon and joined rival camps, taking away their financial muscles.
The four broke ranks with DP Ruto after internal wrangles took center stage, taking away the much-needed financial strength that any candidate would be happy to have.
Reports which Kenyaleo.co.ke could not independently verify indicate that the Tanga Tanga brigade that was known to splash millions in harambees is financially strapped and the Covid-19 restrictions have helped in saving their face with political activities suspended, giving them time to strategize.
Among those who have severed ties with Tanga Tanga in the last few months are David Langat, Joshua Kulei, Zedekiah Bundotich Kiprop, alias Buzeki, and Silas Simotwo all of whom had supported the second in command.
The billionaires who are all businessmen have accused the second in command of failing to honour agreements soon after he got into power in a joint ticket with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
A past article published by Nation indicated that areas of disagreements included contracts on the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), Jomo Kenyatta International Airport’s Greenfield terminal, which was inexplicably cancelled, the school laptop project and special economic zones all of which did not go as expected for the businessmen.
With political realignments gaining momentum, the businessmen have now partnered with rival camps.
David Langat and Buzeki first decamped to Chama Cha Mashinani but bolted out fast as soon as party leader Issac Ruto teamed up with DP Ruto.
They are now understood to be warming up to Raila Odinga’s charm offensive.
Joshua Kulei who was a trusted ally of former President Daniel Moi has teamed up with Baringo Senator Gideon Moi.
Ruto himself has little to worry about as he has made his way to the league of the multimillionaires judging by his hefty donations and investments spread across the country.
He has also won the support of a few other moneyed individuals who are understood to be ready to bankroll his bid.
Among DP Ruto’s newest allies is former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama who is understood to have made his millions in trading in precious stones.
