Drama was witnessed in Tana River County after a woman made away with Ksh.170,000 meant to be the daughter’s bride price during their marriage ceremony.
Sources privy to the development indicate that the mother, Anne Maweni feared her in-laws would shortchange her.
Reports further indicate that the bag handed over to the elders carried wrappers instead of Ksh170,000 dowry price.
The tongue-tied in-laws and other attendance are yet to be establish how and when the bag was switched with the money.
“During the ceremony, she is the one who served the guests and elders food but did not join them on the table. Nobody knew what time she left,” Maweni’s sister Veronica Meilu stated.
The in-laws did not then raise alarm for fear of embarassment, and instead decided to continue with the ceremony and later resolve the matter as a family.
Attempts to reach the mother-in-law bore no fruits with the elders thereafter deciding to vent at Meilu alleging that it was a hatched scheme between the two.
“I was not aware of my sister’s plans, but I was being questioned to explain how we stole the dowry money and where my sister was,” Meilu state.
The matter was then reported to the police who later launched investigations into the rare occurance.
The sister Mailu then divulged to the police, the complicated details about the troubled past between Maweni and the in-laws since her husband’s death.
“After the demise of her husband, Maweni was left with her daughter while the in-laws took her son away. The husband’s property was also shared between the in-laws,” Meilu stated.
