The Orange Democratic Party (ODM) has responded to a statement given by DP William Ruto during his interview on Citizen TV in which he stated that Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya is on his way out of ODM to the Hustler camp alongside many others.
Ruto clarified that he has met Oparanya more than five times over the last two years and that a mass exodus to the Tanga Tanga camp was in the offing.
In a statement issued on 17 April 2021, the party’s Director of Communications Philip Etale affirmed that Oparanya was a loyal member of the party and an ardent supporter of the party leader Raila Odinga.
Etale added that ODM partyt leader Raila Odinga was updated of every meeting, adding that the allegations made by DP Ruto are false.
“Yes, it is true Oparanya has held a few meetings with Deputy President Ruto, be it in Nairobi or elsewhere. And as the great Mahatma Gandhi once said “Whenever you are confronted with an opponent. Conquer him with love,” The party stated.
“Oparanya has not been on any mission of betrayal as some people may want it to look. Sometimes in politics, it is good to learn what your opponent is plotting and be able to get the best defense to counter them.
“Our ODM members and supporters should therefore not read any mischief in the said meetings that our DPL has held with the DP,” he maintained.
A chance meeting between the ODM Deputy party leader and the DP in Maasai Mara sent tongues wagging as conflicting reports emerged.
The DP Ruto camp maintained that the meeting was held at the request of the Kakamega county boss who is on his way to Tanga Tanga while the ODM side held that Oparanya had the full blessings of the party leader to engage with DP Ruto and that Odinga was briefed on what transpired.
