Details have emerged on tension and jostling for the running mate slot in DP Ruto’s camp with concerns that the infighting could eventually see a number of politicians bolt out of the Tanga Tanga camp, denting DP Ruto’s 2022 bid.

At the heart of the current tension is a recent demand by Mt Kenya MPs DP should reserve the running mate position for a person who hails from the region.

Sources aware of the details of the meeting between Ruto and the MPs intimated to that intense lobbying and jostling for the position is underway with rival factions springing up to push for their favourite.

“Some of the front runners include former Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri, Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua and Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria,” said a source privy to the details and who expressed concerns that the fierce fight could be counter-productive.

Reports indicate that although Kiunjuri was absent from the night meeting at Gachagua’s aKaren home, Laikipia Senator John Kinyua vouched for him citing his years of experience in the government, public appeal, mobilization skills and the fact that he is a Hustler success story having risen from a matatu tout to a national leader and a CS.

“Our position remains the same, Kiunjuri is our man to deputise Ruto and he has our blessings to reach out to other regions for support,” said Kinyua.

Two obstacles however stand in his way: His political outfit, The Service Party may become a hindrance unless the DP agrees to form a coalition of parties and others interested in the same slot.

Political analyst Martin Andati opined that “Kiunjuri is also regarded as an outsider because the perception is that Laikipia is in Rift Valley,” he added.

Gachagua is seen as an asset given his mobilization skills gained while serving in the provincial administration, his understanding of government operations and deep pockets.

He is however tainted with allegations of massive corruption and is under investigation by the EACC, something that may svcare away voters keen on weeding out corruption.

Kuri on the other hand is believed to have deep networks in the grassroots that have seen his People’s empowerment pasrty floor Jubilee in at least one by-election and come in second in many others.

He is also good at mobilization and firing up crowds during campaigns, something which coulkd be an asset.

He however lacks the desired national appeal, having been arrested severally for being on the wrong side of the law, including for hate speech.
