Betrayal in the city: Inside Raila’s 4 relationships with loyal allies that ended in chaos and reports of betrayal

Raila Odinga

Raila Odinga’s political history is filled with achievements worth celebrating, years of loyalty to a course he believes in as well as controversies bordering on betrayal in equal measure.

His loyal foot-soldiers have often severed ties with the ODM party leader in controversial circumstances that many interpreted as betrayal.

Otiende Amollo

The recent eviction of the Rarieda MP from the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee painted Odinga as the general who dumps his troops in the battle-field as it happened even before the BBI reggae could end.

Reflecting back, Otiende Amollo has been a loyal defender of Raila and ODM and was part of the legal luminaries who successfully presented Odinga’s case before the supreme court, leading to the annulment of the August 2017 presidential elections results and taking the country back to the ballot in October of the same year.

Come 2021, the circumstances had changed and the party he defended as well as its party leader dropped him like a hot potato.

Miguna Miguna

The self-declared NRM general was at one point a loyal Raila defender who even administered the oath to Raila as The People’s President at Uhuru Park on 30 Jan 2018.

Although ODM luminaries and Raila Odinga initially attempted to assist him, standing in solidarity with him, when his dramatic deportation and tribulations peaked, Miguna was left to fight his battles alone and faded off just like that.

NASA Principals

The truth may never be known on what actually transpired on the day of Raila Odinga’s swearing in as each party has given their own account of how it happened.

What is clear is that Raila did not carry along his NASA principals (Musalia Mudavadi, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula) when he went to Harambee House for the handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta on 09 March 2018.

Revisiting their troubled union, the principals accused Odinga of betrayal, pointing out that he left them behind even as he went to chart a new path for himself.

Norman Magaya

When the NASA CEO took to social media to share his plight on 03 November 2020 at a time when he was staring at eviction with medical bills piling up, the question on many people’s mins was: Where are his high and mighty friends including Raila Odinga who he fought for and supported bravely?

Raila and the Orange party had been in touch with Magaya and had visited him in hospital, ofeering their support, but the message posted on social media sent tongues wagging.

“On the verge of eviction and embarrassment, I fear nothing, absolutely nothing! For I know this will be a day of joy for my detractors & I will gladly give it to you! From the cold street with my toddler daughters, I shall rise high coz there is God !Damn the consequences,” he wrote.

As the true son of my late father and mum, I shall not beg! To hell be the consequences,am ready! Enough of tormenting me &my innocent kids! I have no duty to please anyone . Worst are the allies who pray to see ones downfall! Enjoy it all ! Damn the consequences! Goodbye world !

“Important to note that all my job applications on Kenya miserably fail because of my political stand point ! Long may it continue for I have no intention to change my political affiliation soon! But the conditions you visit on me today will haunt you to death,” Magaya added.
