Teargas Lobbed into the Air as Police Clash With Kenyans Celebrating the Fall of BBI Following High Court Ruling

The Thursday ruling by the High Court that declared the BBI process illegal continues to cause waves across the political divide with DP Ruto and his allies as well as supporters celebrating the move.

However, in Baringo, the celebrations were short-lived after police moved in with teargas to disperese residents who were celebrating the ruling.

The celebartions which were led by local leaders ended abruptly when armed police men moved to clear the streets of Kabarnet town on Friday.

Leaders led by county assembly speaker David Kipkerich amassed hundreds of residents who breached the Covid-19 protocols to cheer and dance after the five-judge bench on Thursday declared the BBI Bill unconstitutional, illegal, null and void.

“We stood for the truth as Baringo assembly to become the first county to vote out BBI, although we were marked red but guess who’s right now,” Kipkerich said adding, “BBI is now dead.”

Police moved in to enforce the covid-19 protocals that ban political events and crowds as was the case in the celebrations.

Youth clashed with a contingent of anti-riot police officers arrived in Land Cruisers to disperse the crowd with teargas with some throwing stones at the officers, forcing them to shoot in the air to scare them away.

“Go mind your own businesses or do your meetings elsewhere not here in town,” a police officer shouted as he ordered the residents away.
