President Uhuru Kenuatta and ODM Leader Raila Odinga

The much-anticipated Nairobi-Kisumu trip by President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga using the newly renovated railway for the Madaraka Day celebrations has been cancelled.

The president and his handshake partner were to board the train from Naivasha to Kisumu on the maiden trip.

The Standard reports that the travel had been cancelled but the project will be launched by President Kenyatta at a later date.

The publication stated that the President’s trip was cancelled due to a lack of spare parts needed for the train Uhuru and Raila were to use to Kisumu on Sunday, May 30 in time for the celebrations.

President Kenyatta and Mr Odinga were expected to take their maiden train trip to Kisumu for the official launch of the renovated Metre Gauge Railway (MGR).

The duo was also expected to open the new railway terminus next to Kisumu Cotton Mills (Kicomi) which was one of the projects the head of state was to unveil in his five-day tour of the Lakeside city.

Kisumu County is hosting this year’s Madaraka Day Celebrations after the National Celebrations Committee spearheading this year’s celebrations reported its satisfaction with the works at the Jomo Kenyatta Sports Complex.

Only 3,000 people will be allowed into the stadium during the celebrations but another 20,000 people will be placed in different venues within the city to follow the proceedings on big screens.
