Tanzanians have turned against Diamond Platnumz and have consequently launched a petition to have him disqualified from the 2021 BET Awards.
Those behind the petition hold that while the star has shone on the globals scene, there is little to show for it in his home country where he has made controversial choices.
Among the allegations brought forth is that the WCB president ‘actively and publicly supported deceased Magufuli’s regime.
It also notes that while the regime was cracking down on opposition leaders and artistes with some going into exile such as Tundu Lissu, Diamond only sang praises, releasing hit after hit praising the regime with his Wasafi artistes joining in.
A particular period referenced is in 2017-2018 over video clips deemed obscene by the authorities.
“In 2017, he deliberately released a single called “Acha Nikae Kimya” (Let me remain quiet) as a response to the increasing demand from the public to speak up and condemn the crackdowns. Diamond to-date has not condemned or spoken up on any of the atrocities committed,” read part of the petition.
Diamond is the only East African nominated at the 2021 BET Awards under the category, Best International Act.
His nomination saw many notable names mock him with singer Harmonize lso taking a jibe at Diamond indirectly mocking him about his nomination.
The list features other superstars such as Best International Act category include; Aya Nakamura (France), Burna Boy (Nigeria), Diamond Platnumz, (Tanzania) Emicida (Brazil), Headie One (UK), Wizkid (Nigeria), Young T & Bugsey (UK) and Youssoupha (France).
