The by Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) has revealed the 10 deadliest roads in Nairobi that claim hundreds of lives annually.
The Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) study report unveiled by NMS on 09 June 2021 revealed that a majority of deaths caused by road accidents affected pedestrians, who accounted for an average of 64.5% of traffic fatalities from 2015-2019.
Below is the list of roads that featured in the top 10 slot where one is likely to be an accident victim.as per the report which was unveiled by NMS boss, Mohamed Badi.
- Mombasa Road
- Waiyaki Way
- Thika Superhighway
- Outering Road
- Eastern Bypass
- Jogoo Road
- Kangundo Road
- Juja Road
- Airport North road
- Langata Road
The report established that reckless driving by motorists, and careless pedestrian crossing is the most common cause of road fatalities.
Private cars led followed by Public Service Vehicles (PSVs), as the leading causes of accidents.
The report further established that pedestrians who participated in the survey stated that the footbridges make for longer journeys, and they would rather cross the road at very risky spots to save time, risking their own lives.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday stood out as the most dangerous days of the week when most fatalities are reported.
7:00pm-9:00pm was established as the most dangerous time with more accidents occurring at night compared to during the day.
