Once the tree that is considered sacred falls, it cannot be used and is usually left to rot.
This comes barely two months after yet another Mugumo tree fell in Kabete, Kiambu county with elders opining that it implied an impending bad omen.
The tree in question was used for hundreds of years by Agikuyu elders at Kwa Njau, Muthure in Kabete in Kiambu County.
“Mugumo tree has never fallen without a profound reason. It’s the only tree which talks and a fall might signal a change of guard or a mighty occurrence,” Mbira Wa Muroki, an elder from the Agikuyu community stated.
According to the Agikuyu myth of origin, the preservation of the fig tree dates back to the times when God created the first man (Gikuyu) and woman (Mumbi) on earth and placed them at the Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga shrine that has of late been at the center of a bitter war.
