Former Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu has been dealt another blow by the courts over his vast property valued at close to Ksh 2 billion.
The property is believed to be proceeds of corruption with the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission closing in on the forme County boss.
Investigations are ongoing with Waititu accused of embezzlement and misappropriation of funds.
during his reign at the helm of Kiambu County, Waititu rapidly amassed wealth amounting to Ksh2 billion.
The High court on, Tuesday 31, froze the properties belonging to the former governor located at the Nairobi’s Central Business District [CBD]], Kiambu, Kajiado, and Machakos.
High court Judge Esther Maina ruled that a restraining order be given to Waititu, his representative or agent barring them from selling, transferring, or dealing in any way with the properties listed in question pending the hearing and determination in a suit.
The former Governor who has been in the spotlight for corruption is said to have acquired the properties while serving as the Kiambu Governor prior to his impeachment in January 2020.
In an attempt to beat the investigative agencies in their own game, he registered the properties in his wife and daughter’s names.
He also used proxy companies while doing business with the government.
Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission traced Ksh108 million in his accounts and Ksh277 million in his wife’s accounts.
Through its lawyers, the agency questioned how Waititu only took five years in office to build a multi-billion empire worth Ksh2 billion
EACC holds that “Ferdinand Ndungu Waititu ‘Babayao’ abused his position of trust as a Member of Parliament – Kabete Constituency and later as Governor – Kiambu County, for private gain by engaging in transactions which were in conflict with the public interest and amassed wealth that was disproportionate to his known legitimate sources of income.
Waititu who wanted to vie for the Kiambu gubernatorial seat was among the politician flagged by the EACC, Asset Recovery Authority[ARA], and Director of Public Prosecution.
The former Kiambu governor failed to secure the United Democratic Alliance for the August election ticket after he was defeated by Kiambu senator Paul Kimani Wamatangi.
