Mudavadi denies claims of storming out of Kakamega church

ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi has denied claims he stormed out of a church function in Western after being denied a chance to address congregants.

Reports indicated that Mudavadi stormed out of Butere Girls Secondary School grounds after ACK Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit announced politicians would not be allowed to give speeches.

Other politicians in attendance included ODM leader Raila Odinga,  Water CS Eugene Wamalwa, Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua and Cotu secretary General Francis Atwoli

However, Mudavadi said he excused himself to attend another church function where he was the chief guest in Murang’a county.

Mudavadi said he sent a message to the Archbishop informing him that he had to leave early because he needed to travel to Kinyona Catholic Church in Kigumo.

Politicians had attended the consecration ceremony of the first woman bishop in the Anglican church, Rose Okeno, in Kakamega.

Sapit is said to have given the order of the consecration programme, then said politicians would not be given a chance to address faithful.

Sapit only recognised the presence of the politicians.

Nyeri Archdiocese Archbishop Anthony Muheria said politicians are welcome to pray in churches like other Christians, but that they should net expect to make addresses.

Muheria said it is important that churches are respected as holy places and that those who use the pulpit to trade insults attract curses upon themselves.

“We welcome them because they need spiritual nourishment but they should not expect to be treated differently or compete with God’s word. This is a wake-up call to the entire nation, clergy, citizens and politicians to respect God and respect His place,” Muheria said in an interview with a local TV station.

Mudavadi said he was surprised to see reports in some sections of the media that he had stormed out of the consecration ceremony, saying they were false.

He said he attended the consecration ceremony because he understands that the country cannot move forward without women.

He said surveys indicate that women are the backbone of the agriculture sector but that in education, women lag behind in university and tertiary education.

“Data indicates that more women are affected by joblessness. If you look at the income of single parents, a single mother’s income is lower than a single father’s,” he said.

Mudavadi reiterated that his party stands for peace and a strengthened economy and that his government would put women at the front in its transformation of the economy.

He said this after scores of women leaders who attended the function challenged presidential aspirants to incorporate women in their top leadership positions.

Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege said the leader who gets a female deputy president stands to bag the millions of women votes.

Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda said there are plans to unite all women leaders, regardless of their political affiliation.

“We want to follow in Martha Karua’s footsteps. She was elected when so few women were vying for political positions,” she said.

The MP said 23 women have been elected into the National Assembly while three are in Senate and three governors, expressing confidence that more will be voted in next year.

Mudavadi further urged Kenyans to vote in leaders devoid of anger whom he said were bound to lead in anger.

He said his presidency will guard the economy, guard the Constitution and provide an environment that will enable Kenyans to settle and do business anywhere.

Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang’ula said the country requires a leader who will solve the many challenges facing Kenyans such as a failing agriculture sector.

“When you see us all here, it is a statement of our intent to unite the country even more,” he said, adding that Kenyans need to understand though there are different ethnicities, the challenges facing Kenyans in one part of the country, affect the entire country.

He urged Kenyans to stop politics of mudslinging and not to vote in leaders who divide them along tribal lines.

“We must build a country on truth, peace and unity. A country that we will all be proud to live in,” he said.

Source of inequality and poverty is corruption,Kalonzo says

Wiper Democratic Movement leader Hon Kalonzo Musyoka now says corruption is the source of the inequality and poverty being witnessed in this country.

He says leaders who have stolen and enriched themselves while impoverishing a majority of Kenyans to an extent that now Kenyans have normalized the vice.

Kalonzo says Kenyans have thrown in the towel on corruption to an extent of praising the corrupt asmy thief, my choice.

On matters politics, Kalonzo has now dropped the CALEB tag he was given when supporting Raila and now says he will adopt the JOSHUA mantle to lead the Kenyan nation to the CANAAN that all deserve.

He says Kenya requires a paradigm shift post Covid-19 pandemic and that is why he is promising Kenyans a 24 hour economy model that will stimulate the economy in a very fast manner thus creating massive jobs to Kenyans.

The Wiper Leader was speaking on Sunday when he attended a church service at Royal Christian Church in Ongata Rongai encouraging Kenyans not to give up because a Kalonzo led government come 2022 will recover stolen wealth and revert it to the economy.

Kalonzo says COVID-19 pandemic has worsened an already worse situation and thus he promises to make secondary education free to all so as to at least ease the burden on parents.

The Wiper Boss has urged the Government to make every effort to vaccinate over 10 million Kenyans ahead of their targeted dates of December adding that the virus is killing Kenyans at a very high rate and the medication for those admitted are very expensive for a common mwananchi.

Leaders accompanying the Wiper Leader reiterated their stand that Kalonzo will not back any other leader in 2022 and that they are committed to traverse the entire country to sell a Kalonzo Presidency.

  • Politicians to sign decency charter ahead of polls, says NCIC

Politicians will soon sign a political decency charter in latest efforts by National Cohesion and Integration Commission to tackle hate speech ahead of next year’s polls.

The commission has vowed it will not tolerate hate speech and war mongering moving forward even as it scaled up action against offenders by ensuring they are barred from elective positions, public office and eventual black listing internationally.

Speaking to KBC Monday on good morning show,  NCIC Chairman Rev Dr Samuel Kobia said they will hold a series of symposia before June 2022 that will hold politicians and leaders accountable as part of its roadmap towards election attaining peaceful 2022 general elections.

Presidential candidates will be expected to lead the process dubbed ‘Election Bila Noma’ by signing the charter committing themselves to the path of peace and decency in speech and action.

“We want a political leadership that acts in a decent and civil manner” he said.

Although the commission is seeking more powers and tough penalties for perpetrators of incitement and hate speech through parliament, Kobia avers that progress had been made in the fight against the vice.

“There is a bill in parliament that is still being debated and seeks to empower the commission to create a tribunal to deal with hate speech. We have also decide to work very closely with the DCI and DPP” said Kobia adding that close to 60 hate speech cases are under probe.

So far, the commission has enhanced surveillance by creating the walls of fame and shame which according to the chair has led to a decline in the vice.

“ No politician wants to be barred from running for an elective post. We are in the process of coming up with a criteria for determining candidates for elections. We have began consultations with IEBC, party leaders and the diplomatic community for imposition of severe penalties ”

  • Expo 2020 Dubai hands over the Kenya Pavilion to CS Maina

Expo 2020 Dubai hands over the Kenya Pavilion to CS Maina

The pavilion which is one of the most innovative and technology-driven is among the 192 country pavilions that will be participating at the EXPO 2020 Dubai, scheduled from 1st October 2021- 31st March 2022 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

“This for us is a great opportunity to show the world we are here, and we are forced to reckon with. It is a clear testimony that Kenya is ready to join the league of Nations to collaborate, exhibit, showcase and sell to the world products that are truly and authentically Kenyan. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the UAE Government for supporting Kenya’s participation by providing a sponsorship package that catered for the design and construction of the Kenya pavilion. Kenya is ready to do business with the world in this greatest show of all times,” CS Maina.

During the EXPO, Kenya will showcase trade and investment opportunities aligned to the Big Four Development Agenda: Manufacturing, Food Security, Universal Healthcare and Affordable Housing for all. The country’s development agenda is aligned to the EXPO theme of “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”.

The Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Industrialization, Trade and Enterprise Development Betty Maina has Monday officially received the Kenya pavilion at the EXPO 2020 Dubai.

The Kenya pavilion is strategically located to the UAE pavilion that is in a shape of a falcon in flight.

Kenya’s pavilion is themed “Feel the Energy” a representation of the dynamic spirit, love, innovative thirst and patriotic energy elicited by the Kenyan people in building Brand Kenya.

Kenya will leverage this global expo to showcase its Trade, Investment and Tourism opportunities to the world, including visitors to the Kenya Pavilion and the UAE business community.

It is hoped that this initiative will go a long way in enhancing the country’s efforts of consolidating and diversifying its market share in the UAE market.

The pavilion will not only take the visitors on a journey around Kenya’s greatest assets but will also highlight its economic potential in various sectors including; Technology & innovation, Manufacturing, infrastructure, hospitality education among others.

From the Pavilion, Kenya will showcase its economic diversification, beyond what it has been traditionally known for. The country will showcase its potential as a leading exporter of goods, services, talent, innovation, and its rich culture.

“Kenya has lined up several activities during the 6 months Expo, which include celebrations of our culture and heritage through music and film,  Business Match Making and B2B meetings through a Trade and Investment Forum that will bring together Dubai and Kenyan business people, distribution of one million rose flowers during valentine’s day on February 14th 2022 and a Kenya cultural extravagance, among other planned activities. Thematic months have also been planned to heighten Kenya’s participation and attract visitors to the Kenya Pavilion and the country at large. Our Unique selling point: Kenya is the Land of unlimited possibilities. We, therefore, look forward to showcasing these opportunities to the world” Commissioner-General- Kenya, Dr Wilfred Marube.

The Expo 2020 Dubai will provide an opportunity for Kenya to diversify and consolidate its exports to the UAE and the Middle East.

Key among the products is horticulture (fruits and vegetables), coffee, tea, meat and meat products, logistics, flowers, edible nuts, tourism, and sports services, among others.

The Expo will also present the possibility for Kenyan companies to consolidate market share in the UAE and also establish new distribution channels for the neighbouring countries in the Middle East.

Kenya’s exports to UAE have been growing but in a fluctuating pattern over the last five years. This stood at US$ 305million in 2016 and US$324million in 2020.

Kenya commands a competitive export sector that can meet any opportunity arising in the world.

The United Arab Emirates portends an opportunity to increase Kenyan exports of products that already have a global comparative advantage, and hence competitiveness. Exports as a country to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region have been in the environment of 555 million Dollars which is a mere 0.11% market share of the potential 525 billion Dollars of the region’s total imports.

Kenya is therefore looking at this Expo as a platform to make inroads and grow exports, attract investment inflows, and increase tourism arrivals from the region to our country.

“The UAE market is a significant market, considering its strategic location as a point of entry to the Gulf region and a distribution hub of goods and services to the entire world. We call upon our local exporters to exploit this market for its potential to do business. The Expo will be a steppingstone to consolidate Kenya as a gateway for global trade and investment” CS Maina.

The Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency is the Responsible National Authority (RNA), spearheading Kenya’s participation while positioning it as a land of unlimited opportunities.

  • Liverpool’s transfer window rated and slated: Assessing Jurgen Klopp’s summer business

Liverpool’s transfer window rated and slated: Assessing Jurgen Klopp’s summer business

Liverpool’s quiet summer transfer window was well documented as they look to wrestle back their Premier League crown.

The Reds’ resources came under the spotlight last term as defensive injuries took apart their backline.

In response Ibrahima Konate arrived from RB Leipzig but the centre-half remained the only marquee signing.

Jurgen Klopp has been happy to prioritise continuity over fresh faces with Liverpool’s XI largely maintaining the same look for several years now.

Critics have argued that the Reds missed a trick in not being more aggressive in the transfer market.

The departure of Gini Wijnaldum certainly leaves a sizeable hole, but Klopp has backed youth to fill the void.

We take a look at the club’s summer dealings.

All three found themselves sidelined for lengthy periods which left Klopp light at the back.

He raided the Bundesliga outfit to sign Konate, a man who had long been on his radar.

The Frenchman looks ready made to suit the Premier League and has had Champions League exposure, which will also be a plus.

Klopp will now have to settle on a centre-back pairing as there will be a reluctance to keep chopping and changing.

It means Konate may find himself as a sub more often to start with before he looks to assert himself, potentially at Joe Gomez’s expense.

Losing a player of the Dutchman’s calibre is never easy, but having to go on without a replacement just deepens the blow.

It became apparent around the New Year that Wijnaldum was unlikely to sign a new deal but he continued to be a regular.

Harry Wilson has already scored for new club Fulham

Eventually he left for PSG and Liverpool opted against adding a replacement.

Now Klopp is lucky enough to have a host of options at his disposal in the middle of the park and Harvey Elliott is set to be the big winner.

Nevertheless, Wijnaldum has been a crucial part of Liverpool’s success and letting him go without adding someone of similar quality may prove costly.

It was something of a double edged sword this.

Wilson had proven at Bournemouth that he was capable of playing top flight football, having impressed on loan.

Last season he again headed away, this time to Championship side Cardiff City, and has now moved to Fulham.

If Wilson were going to be handed a first team run you’d have thought Klopp would’ve done so by now.

Failing to do so perhaps suggested he was happy to look elsewhere, and getting north of £10m for him represents good business.

The Swiss star headed to Anfield on a free and has proved to be a good squad player, so whatever decision Liverpool made was going to be a good one.

Shaqiri’s two goals against Manchester United in 2018 will ensure he lives long in the memory of the Anfield faithful.

The 29-year-old has moved to Lyon for just shy of £10m.

Lyon have signed Xherdan Shaqiri ( Image: AFP via Getty Images)

Opportunities were set to be few and far between so there was a willingness from the player to move on and the cash from his sale helped counteract the investment in Konate.

The likes of Ben Davies, Rhys Williams and Sepp van den Berg have all headed to the Championship on loan.

Sheffield United, Swansea and Preston have been the three teams to profit – and Liverpool will hope to do so in the long-term.

Williams penned a new deal before he left and there may well be long-term hopes for the defender.

Davies was signed last year but is yet to play. That said, if a loan move can increase his resale value Liverpool will consider that good business.

The same can be said for Van den Berg, who has already scored twice in seven games.

  • Universities be centers of peace building

Universities be centers of peace building

Universities and other institutions of higher learning have been dubbed as game changers in the country’s politics as they hold the potential to eliminate the tribal divides during electioneering periods.

Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs Cabinet Secretary (CS) Joe Mucheru said that universities have been referred to as the melting pots of cultures since this is where ideas are hatched, where intellectuals infuse their ideals to the next generation of leaders and where different cultures come together as one in search of enlightenment and this citadel should therefore be the model for peace in the country.

Speaking on Friday at the University of Nairobi (UoN) during the closing ceremony of the first National student’s convention on youth peace and elections, Mucheru said that he is particularly encouraged that the project brings young people from across the tribal and political divide, to not only promote dialogue and peace, but also to develop cohesive and resilient relationships that promote mechanisms to resolve conflict peacefully.

“This is what we need as a country: preaching peace and unity rather than politics of division. I am proud of the work that the Universities and Colleges Students’ Peace Association of Kenya (USCPAK) is doing under the Executive Director Allan Chacha and the fact that they are bringing the youth together and discussing peaceful elections just 11 months to the election,” said Mucheru.

The CS urged the youth to take advantage of their numbers to make a difference for themselves and for this country saying… “I also take this opportunity to challenge you to seek elective office so that you can embark on the journey of making meaningful gains for yourselves and your country. You have the largest stake in this country as you constitute 75.1 per cent of our population. It is your time to take the mantle of leadership.

“I encourage you to read the biography of Tom Mboya, who at 29 was recruited by Martin Luther King Junior and was in John F. Kennedy’s election team. You will see that there is no better time than now to wake up and heed the call for leadership,” said Mucheru.

The Cabinet Secretary said that with Kenya having the best internet connectivity in Africa, having a youthful population and the innovative nature of Kenyans, the country is set to take off and get to the levels of Malaysia and Singapore.

The CS said that the Ajira digital programme right now has over 1.2 million young people working and that number can rise to even 10 million because the demand they are getting from Korea, Singapore, USA and Australia among others is very high.

“We want to create awareness on these job opportunities and that is why we are building Ajira youth empowerment centers across the country so that the youth can go there and be able to have access to machines and internet and work online,” said the CS.

USCPAK Executive Director Allan Chacha said that there is a lot of tension between the police and students and as a way of mending the strained relations, they have planned a series of clean-ups in police stations together with the police so that they can interact and defuse the tension.

“We are tired of being given small money and being incited to harm our fellow youth, the only complaining that we will do is at the ballot box,” said Chacha.

He said that they were championing the Mwanafunzi Investment Trust Fund because the students say that the reason they are used to cause chaos is due to lack of a source of income before and after graduating making them vulnerable to misuse.

“The initiative is aimed at encouraging the youth to save and invest. The proposal we have is that if a student is able to save even Sh100 per month then that in itself can be used as collateral instead of being asked for a title deed while accessing a loan from financial institutions,” said Chacha.

IEBC Acting Director for Voter Education, Partnerships and Communications Amina Sudi said that they would carry out an aggressive voter registration and they have agreed with the universities that the institutions will be used for voter registration.

“We are going to have an open voter registration for our university students where they will register at their universities and be allowed to vote at their respective home areas,” said Sudi.

“As young people, I urged you to go out and say what you want to say using the ballot, you don’t have to shout or go to the streets, you have a weapon to use kindly use it wisely,” she said.

University of Nairobi Dean of Students Johnson Kinyua said that university students in their hundreds of thousands deserved a seat in Parliament which would see their issues articulated in the way they deserve.

Kinyua called on the IEBC, Parliament and the Judiciary to look at ways this could be actualized legally.

  • Tourism stakeholders concerned over continued political tension

Tourism stakeholders concerned over continued political tension

Tourism industry players have warned that the continued political tension in the country has the potential of dismantling gains made in reviving the multi billion-shilling sector.

They noted that after months of enduring negative effects of the pandemic, the current political tension risks sliding them out of business for a second time.

Lake Nakuru Lodge Marketing Director Joseph Muya said the sector being a long-term investment, tourists normally make their bookings months or years ahead of their visit.

He however revealed that there has been a decline in bookings after a number of countries in the international market started issuing travel advisories.

He added; “Online bookings are still unpredictable, we have become a hand to mouth business of late whatever we get we move on since you cannot be sure.”

According to Muya, Kenyans had also become wary on whether post elections the country would be safe saying most people prefer not to spend blindly, which in turn will negatively affect the industry.

With Nakuru being a political hotbed, Muya stated that the county was also among the fastest growing tourism destinations saying any form of violence will roll back the gains.

Muya has rallied for the formulation of a law that will compel politicians who incite violence and encourage vandalism of properties to pay damages to affected investors.

He said once a leader has been indicted in such an offense, they should be required in law to also pay for any potential loss of investment and job opportunities any business would have.

He further said the government needs to engage foreign missions of the United States and the United Kingdom who have given an advisory to visiting citizens.

During the pandemic, he said the industry laid off a number of workers in the sector due to poor revenues adding that the current temperatures will see more being laid off.

According to him, loss of employment is a contributing factor especially to the youths who have of late recorded high numbers of suicide due to lack of jobs.

Speaking during a funeral service for the four at Siranga Primary School grounds the lawmaker lamented that close to two weeks since the incident happened no suspect has been apprehended.

Mourners including a section of area leaders accused the security apparatus of being too slow in their investigations.

Led by Ugenya Member of Parliament David Ochieng, the leaders called on the relevant bodies to fast track investigations to ensure the perpetrators face the full force of the law.

Ugenya Assistant County Commissioner Rufus Kihara assured residents that authorities were doing all they can to unravel the mystery surrounding the frequent killings in the area.

The deceased security guards were George Agara Opuch aged 68, 59 year old Patrick Oduor Ondoo, 49 year old Benard Odhiambo Opondo and Thadeus Ochieng Radido aged 43 years.

  • ‘Formation of political alliances will not make Kenya any better’ says Ruto

‘Formation of political alliances will not make Kenya any better’ says Ruto

Leaders Joining DP Ruto in an Event

Kenyans are no longer interested in the politics that does not help change their lives for the better, Deputy President William Ruto has said.

He said people had come to the realisation that changing the Constitution was only aimed at creating positions for a few leaders instead of transforming the country.

“As a people, the decision has been made. We are going to build an equal-opportunity society through an economic revolution that is anchored on the bottom-up model,” he said.

In the proposed policy, Dr Ruto explained, millions of jobs would be generated and a conducive business environment created.

However, he noted that many political figures were not happy that Kenya was about to take off.

“There are multiple plans to derail it. But they will not succeed. We are building an indomitable alliance of the ordinary people that will propel this grand dream,” added the Deputy President.

He spoke Thursday when he met religious leaders from Embu County at his Karen residence.

The Deputy President said it was not going to be business as usual in Kenya.

“The poor will no longer be misused by the powerful to go up the political ladder,” he argued.

Dr Ruto insisted that the formation of political alliances will not make Kenya any better.

“It is not the alliance of the mighty but that of the lowly and the jobless that will create a revolution that will change our country.”MPs present during the meeting were Cecily Mbarire (nominated), John Muchiri (Manyatta), Geoffrey King’ang’I (Mbeere South), Eric Muchangi (Runyenjes), Alice Wahome (Kandara), Jayne Kihara (Naivasha), Rigathi Gachagua (Mathira) and Purity Ngirici (Woman Rep., Kirinyaga).
