Prime Cabinet Secretary, Rt. Hon. Musalia Mudavadi made his way into the National House answering questions from the legislators. Musalia Mudavadi told the Members of parliament that the Government of Kenya has spent over Kshs.19 billion since July 2022 to alleviate the impact of drought in the country’s Arid and Semi-Arid Areas.

Rt. Hon. Musalia Mudavadi today responded to Questions by Hon. Yusuf Hassan, MP Kamukunji Constituency regarding the drought management, supply, and distribution of relief food in Arid and Semi-Arid Areas.

Hon. Mudavadi disclosed that the Ministry of East African Community, the ASALs, and Regional Development conducted a National Food and Nutrition Security Assessment to establish the impact of the drought in the Semi-Arid and identify the number of people affected, and determine necessary interventions.

The assessment revealed that approximately 4.4 million people in the ASALs and an additional 495,362 in nine non-traditional ASAL regions faced acute food insecurity, and over 2.5 million livestock deaths were attributable to the drought.

Members of the National Assembly learned that the worst affected counties were identified as Marsabit, Garissa, Isiolo, Mandera, Tana River, Samburu, Turkana, and Narok, where people were displaced in large numbers, and livestock and household items were swept away by floods.

In a session chaired by Speaker, Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, Members of the National Assembly asked forty supplementary Questions regarding measures to replenish livestock that have perished due to drought, over-reliance on rain-fed agriculture, and the Safety Net programs the Government has put in place to protect from recurring drought.

“Interventions have been in terms of relief food, emergency relief cash transfers, support to the school feeding program, cash transfers under the Hunger Safety Net Program, water trucking, and livestock off-take”, said Hon. Musalia Mudavadi.

He further added that county governments had also provided relief food assistance, scaled up cash transfers, livestock feeds and vaccination, and water trucking, as well as overseeing peace dialogues and resource-use agreements.

Documents tabled revealed that development partners, UN agencies, NGOs, and other non-state actors have contributed more than Ksh. 48 Billion towards drought response interventions, while the private sector-led National Steering Committee on Drought Response (NSCDR) has distributed 163,150 food hampers worth Ksh.450 Million to approximately 978,900 most affected persons.

While making his submissions to the National Assembly, Hon. Mudavadi informed lawmakers that the Government has also taken other steps to ensure relief supplies reach as many people as possible and to scale up relief and humanitarian response to save lives, alleviate suffering, and bolster human dignity among affected parties.

Mudavadi was adamant that it wouldn’t be soon to seek out the ongoing economy. The CS said the country should be ready for challenges that will last for at least two years, focusing on priorities.

“I want to be very honest, as a former Minister for Finance that we are in this for a long haul. We are working to turn the economy around,” he said.

Prof. Kindiki reports that the government is working hard to clean all the remains threats for the people of the north to live saying that the bandits had specific areas where they used to plan attacks. The government noticed that; after giving the ultimatum of 24hrs of vacation, the banditry also took the 24-hour window to mix up with the people.

“Operations in our view a success, we have learned there are still gaps but we shall seal the gaps, we are determined and we will win the war, its either Kenya or banditry, it’s either the law or crime as Kenya will not give way for bandits, Kenya will stand as bandits must give way,” CS says.

“We will Sue the Government for Mukumu Deaths” Teachers Union vows

The laxity of the ministries of education and health gave way to the deaths of four students and a senior teacher at Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls’ High School in Kakamega County.

This is according to the Kenya Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) who lay the blame squarely on the two ministries, tasked with quality assurance and public health and sanitation respectively.

An angry Kuppet secretary general Akelo Misori has told the media in Nairobi that the union is contemplating taking the Ministry of Health to court for failure to ensure compliance with public health standards in schools.

Misori explained that the union dispatched a team of health experts to the school after the incident said to have been food poisoning, which found out that the victims died as a result of contaminated food occasioned by poor sanitation at the school.

According to the team, the school’s water was stored in an underground tank that was likely to be contaminated by a nearby sewerage system.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu consequently moved school principal Ms. Fridah Ndolo, blaming her for the situation that led to the unfortunate deaths, a move Kuppet termed unfair buck-passing.

“There are serious compliance issues at the Ministry of Health as long as diarrhea is not reported, no one cares,” charged Misori.

Misori equally cited a ‘dysfunctional’ directorate of quality assurance at the Ministry of Education for the mess.

He said the union holds the government accountable for the loss of lives at the school and consequently pushes for compensation.

“We must sue the Ministry of Health for this; we will sue for damages.”

‘I’m ready to get back’: Afrobeats superstar Davido drops new album ‘Timeless’

In an interview with CNN’s Larry MadowoAfrobeats musician Davido discusses how losing his son affected his music and his new album ‘Timeless.’

In November 2022, David Adeleke, better known as Davido, took a break from public life to deal with the tragic loss of his three-year-old son, Ifeanyi. After almost six months away – except for a performance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup closing ceremony – the American-born entertainer has released a new album saying he is healing and “ready to stand up again.”

The 17-track album called “Timeless” is Davido’s fourth studio project since he ventured into music 11 years ago. The title, he says, is a manifestation of his goal for the album to remain a classic for decades. “I know in years to come, if you interview me, we are still going to be talking about this album,” he recently told Madowo in Lagos, Nigeria.

The artist credits his return to the music scene to the overwhelming amount of support he received from family, friends, fans and well-wishers. “At some point I couldn’t open my Instagram for weeks. One day, I just checked it and I saw messages from every kind of person in the world. I was like ‘you’re fine, you see everybody is rooting for you.’ That was one thing that really made me strong enough to stand up again, get back in the studio and do what I love,” Davido told CNN.

He describes the journey the album takes the listener on, “With this record you will definitely hear me talk about a couple things I’ve been through personally, but you are also gonna dance.”

Now that he is back doing what he loves, the goal, he says, is for him and his team to continue to make music that resonates with people. “That’s what we’re here to do, that’s what we were brought to do in this world. I’m just ready to get back, I’m ready to just go back on the road. A lot of things are going to be different.”

Larry Madowo’s full interview with Davido will air in a special African Voices Changemakers episode on April 22nd 2023.

  • Business conditions decline at softer pace in March- Stanbic Bank

Business conditions decline at softer pace in March- Stanbic Bank

The Kenyan private sector economy continued to run in contraction territory in March, the latest survey data showed, as business activity and new orders decreased for the second month running amid rising prices and cash flow problems. However, the rate of declines lessened somewhat from the initial downturn in February, while businesses signaled renewed uplifts in employment and purchasing.

Nevertheless, inflationary pressures underlying the deterioration in economic conditions remained exceedingly sharp, with around 30% of businesses reporting an uptick in purchase prices linked to problems accessing US dollars and a worsening of exchange rates. The latest increase in costs sent output price inflation to a five-month high, while related mentions of imported goods shortages led firms to seek safety stockpiles.

The headline figure derived from the survey is the Purchasing Managers’ Index™ (PMI). Readings above 50.0 signal an improvement in business conditions in the previous month, while readings below 50.0 show a deterioration.

At 49.2 in March, the headline index signaled a slight deterioration in business conditions at the end of the first quarter of the year and the second monthly contraction in a row. However, the rate of deterioration lessened notably from February, when the index dropped to a six-month low of 46.6.

The softer decline in business conditions reflected weaker falls in both output and new orders during March. While many respondents continued to see demand fall due to high prices and a lack of money in circulation, others saw a recovery in customer orders, particularly from abroad.

Sector data signaled that the latest contractions in output and sales were centered on wholesale & retail companies. By contrast, manufacturing, agriculture, construction, and services recorded expansions in both metrics.

At the same time, the latest data signaled renewed rises in employment and purchasing in March, although growth in both cases was only mild. The rise in purchasing reflected some efforts to build inventories of inputs, as firms reported that difficulties accessing US dollars had led to a shortage of commodities and longer delivery times.

Weakness in the Kenyan shilling against the US dollar meanwhile drove another marked increase in purchasing costs. Around 30% of firms saw purchase prices rise since February, with increased taxes and fuel prices also cited. Overall cost inflation remained among the highest seen since the survey began in January 2014, leading firms to raise their output prices at the quickest rate in five months.

Finally, while the outlook for future business activity dropped to a three-month low in March, it remained strong and above the level seen throughout much of 2022. Firms often commented on plans to open new branches and increase capacity over the coming year, amid hopes that demand will begin to recover.
