    Additionally, LG’s energy-efficient HVAC systems have helped Kenyan property owners to reduce energy consumption and costs.     According to the Built Environment Report 2023 by the Architectural Societies of Kenya, the Kenyan real estate industry recorded a bounce back in 2022 after two years of a sharp drop during the COVID-19 pandemic. The report finds that there was an annual 6.8% rise in property sales from March 2022, which resonates with findings from Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) which recorded a 6.4% growth in the construction industry in the same period.

    The Coca-Cola system in Kenya awarded the first winner with a year’s worth of food shopping in Nairobi.

    Kevin Mituga, a Saika resident in Nairobi was announced as the winner in the ongoing promotion.

    Speaking at the award ceremony, Kevin Mituga said, “It’s a once in a lifetime chance to be able to win a shopping voucher for me and my family. I participated at least seven times but was not lucky. I emerged victorious on the eighth chance. I urge Kenyans to continue participating in the promotion for a chance to win big.”

    The campaign, which runs for 12 weeks, offers consumers a chance to win over 50 million Kenya Shillings worth of prizes, including cash (mobile money), airtime, and shopping vouchers.

    To participate, consumers need to buy a 1L, 1.25L or 2L bottle of Coca-Cola, Fanta, or Sprite and check under the green cap for a code. They will then need to send an SMS with the unique code found under the green cap to 40111 for a chance to win instant prizes and be entered into a draw for more prizes. The SMS to 40111 is free.

    In addition to the grand prize of a year’s worth of food shopping other prizes include instant cash, airtime and shopping vouchers, enabling consumers to share meal moments with their loved ones. The promotion seeks to inspire Kenyans to continue enjoying meal moments together with a Coca-Cola.

    Huawei technologies has announced plans to scale up the use of cloud and solar technology to deepen environmental conservation at a time when Kenya is determined to expand the national forest cover to 10 per cent from the current 7.2 percent by 2030 by planting nearly 2 billion tree seedlings.

    Speaking at the Connected Summit in Kwale, Adam Lane, Huawei Kenya’s Deputy CEO Government Affairs, stated that modern technology is capable of boosting the overall conservation efforts with clear data that can be used for prevention of further destruction.

    “Artificial Intelligence (AI) -powered acoustics solutions deployed in tree canopies can detect the sounds of chainsaws and trucks associated with illegal logging in rainforests and send real-time alerts to rangers in the field,” he explained noting that while technology underpins nature conservation, suitable partnerships between technology players, conservationists and governments will deliver the results.

    In addition, infrared camera technology analyzed by cloud AI, for example, is helping to track and monitor species that are close to extinction. Lane pointed out that there is a clear growing momentum and buy-in from the conservation community to use more technology but also to develop and create new ways it can be applied. The appropriate deployment of technology will help ensure more sustained benefits from its application to achieve fair and effective conservation action

    This includes initiatives such as the use of AI and big data analytics powered by Huawei Cloud to monitor biodiversity and protect ecosystems around the world. By harnessing the power of sound, conservationists are able to track thousands of species globally and automatically detect the presence of illegal activities. It works by building weather-resistant sensors hidden inside different parts of the forest and upload all the sounds recorded to a cloud-based server and can detect illegal logging over a kilometer away.

    “For nature conservation, we must develop solutions that can understand the world’s ecosystems and form the basis of effective protective measures. With our partners, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), we have been developing solutions under our Tech4Nature and TECH4ALL initiatives to make this possible in ecosystems around the world, from rainforests, mountains, and plateaus to wetlands, rivers, and oceans,” said Lane.

    He also outlined the role of solar technology in boosting conservation efforts, stating that solar power can be a productive use of otherwise unproductive land such as hills or deserts. It is also capable of being used to provide affordable and green power to boost local industries and power irrigation for local agriculture.

    These include the range of Smart PV and Energy Storage Solutions, for residential and commercial usage, equipment like inverters and Energy Storage Systems (ESS) for households and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) solar solutions for enterprises, which contribute to reduced power consumption costs by as much as 30 per cent. As of March 31, 2022, Huawei had helped customers generate 535.9 billion kWh of green power, save 16.2 billion kWh of electricity, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 260 million tons, which was equivalent to planting 360 million trees.

    “Climate change has now become a huge roadblock for social development so we need to move faster towards low-carbon development and green growth models, protect the environment and promote green economic recovery,” said Lane.

    Marketplace Africa explores Uganda’s plan to bring biotech to farms and fields

    In the latest edition of Marketplace Africa, CNN’s Zain Asher learns how Uganda is growing its economy through biotechnology in the agricultural sector.

    “We are prone to natural disasters. We all rely on Mother Nature and if the rains fail, then almost everything fails. And today as we talk, you find out there are other pests and diseases coming up and they’ve been quite detrimental to the environment. You have heard about one, the coffee wilt disease. With that, most production areas, most farms were decimated to 50 per cent back in the 90s,” according to Dr. Ambrose Agona, Director General of NARO [Uganda National Agricutural Research Organisation].

    With around 70% of the country’s working population engaged in agriculture, proponents of biotechnology are hoping these crops will be a growing part of Uganda’s future. According to Erostus W.N Nsubuga, CEO of AGT Group, “. Almost 40% of the food was being lost in the yields because of poor seed and different diseases coming into agricultural food. Tissue culture is a process technology technique you can use and produce plants which are pest and disease free.”

    AGT Laboratories is one of Uganda’s leading agricultural biotech companies, where the growth of plants is accelerated. Farm Manager of Wabiruko Farm, Seguya Isaac, explains “Now we have increased the size of the bunch we sell in the market. Before we could get a small bunch and a small cost. Here, when you sell 100 bunches, you are sure of 5 million. But before, you’d sell 200 or 300 bunches and you couldn’t make 5 million sale.”

    Even though the continent began experimenting with commercial biotech crops in 1998, it was in 2018 when a bill approving the sale of biotechnology crops commercially within Uganda passed, however it is still waiting on the president’s signature. According to Dr Ambrose, “Once we have laws that regulate what we do in terms of genetic engineering then I think the investments in crop improvement or lifestyle productivity will come down.”

    Despite the challenges, including infrastructure as it pertains to electricity, Nsubuga persists on growing Uganda’s economy with the use of biotechnology.

    Taking care of your health and that of your loved ones can be quite expensive. With the current economic status in Kenya, out-of-pocket spending on healthcare can be a huge financial burden for a household to bear. But with a growing population, an increase in Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and the emergence of new variants of diseases, healthcare remains to be a necessity rather than an option.     Paris-based firm OLEA Insurance Solutions has announced the appointment of a new CEO.

    Mr. Anthony Wachira will replace the outgoing CEO, Herbert Ocholi, the founder of OLEA Kenya Insurance Solutions, effective 1st April 2023.

    Wachira has a solid and proven Kenyan and regional insurance market background. He joined OLEA Kenya in 2021 in a management position. Before then, he worked at Minet and Alexander Forbes. Some of his big wins were steering profitable growth strategies, while forging lasting relationships.

    OLEA Insurance solutions entered the Kenyan market in 2019 after buying a 40% stake in the Kenyan Koolridge Insurance Brokers. The acquisition came with a name change to OLEA Kenya Insurance Brokers.

    “The OLEA Insurance partnership was a great feat for our company,” said outgoing CEO and Founder, Herbert Ocholi. “As fate would have it, the Covid pandemic hit the world a few months later, and our company suffered the same devastation and loss of business as most businesses. But, we managed to survive due to our clients’ utmost confidence in us.”

    AccessAfrica is Access Bank’s service that allows customers to conveniently transfer and receive money across the world from loved ones and business partners.

    The partnership will provide simplified transfers for AccessAfrica customers, enabling real-time, cost-effective cross-border payments for individuals and businesses who want to send financial support to their families abroad or facilitate trade transactions.     According to the International Fund for Agricultural Development, IFAD, migrant workers sent over US$95 billion to and within Africa in 2021, benefiting over 200 million family members, majority of whom live in rural areas.     Huawei released its 2022 Annual Report in which the company reported steady operations throughout 2022, having generated Ksh 9.3 trillion (USD 93 billion) in revenue and Kshs 500 billion (USD 5 billion) in net profits.

    Huawei continued to strengthen investment in R&D, with an annual expenditure of Kshs 230 billion (USD 23 billion) in 2022, representing 25.1% of the company’s annual revenue and bringing its total R&D expenditure over the past 10 years to more than Kshs 14 trillion (USD141.5 billion).

    “In 2022, a challenging external environment and non-market factors continued to take a toll on Huawei’s operations”, said Eric Xu, Huawei’s Rotating Chairman, at the company’s annual report press conference. “In the midst of this storm, we kept racing ahead, doing everything in our power to maintain business continuity and serve our customers. We also went to great lengths to grow the harvest – generating a steady stream of revenue to sustain our survival and lay the groundwork for future development,” he added.

    Also present at the event was Sabrina Meng, Huawei’s CFO. She noted, “Despite substantial pressure in 2022, our overall business results were in line with forecast. At the end of 2022, our liability ratio was 58.9% and our net cash balance was Ksh.2.5 trillion (USD 25 billion). In addition, our balance of total assets reached one trillion yuan, largely composed of current assets such as cash, short-term investments, and operating assets. Our financial position remains solid, with strong resilience and flexibility. In 2022, our total R&D spend was Ksh 2.3 trillion (USD 23 billion), representing 25.1% of our total revenue – among the highest in Huawei’s history. In times of pressure, we press on – with confidence.”

    In 2022, revenue from Huawei’s carrier, enterprise, and consumer businesses was Ksh 4.1 trillion (USD 41 billion), Ksh 1.9 trillion (USD19.3 billion), and Ksh 3.1 trillion (USD 31 billion), respectively.

    Huawei is a strong proponent of growing together with its ecosystem partners, and believes that openness and collaboration leads to shared success. The company has continued to open up its platform capabilities across its HarmonyOS, Kunpeng, Ascend, and cloud portfolios, focusing on improving developer experience as well as enabling and supporting its ecosystem partners on all fronts. Huawei currently works with more than 9 million developers and over 40,000 ecosystem partners to fuel ecosystem-based innovation and create greater value for its customers.

    In last year’s KCSE exams (2022-2023)  the whole constituency just garnered a single B- with Zero C+ and several C- and below grades.

    During the Campaigns period Hon. Capt. Ruweida Mohamed Obo, who is a commercial pilot holding Commercial Pilot License promised that she will give key attendance notes on Education, Equality of Bursary distribution from the previous regime where a single student was given up to Ksh. 70,000 whereas others received Ksh.5,000 or Ksh.10,000 in sec schools.

    Capt. Ruweida currently she is in closely monitoring bursary distribution to honor her pledges during the campaigns.

    Hon. Obo, has equally started to distribute a Bursary of Ksh. 8,000 for any secondary day school, Ksh. 16,000 to each student of boarding secondary school and Ksh. 25,000 in every university student at any university provided is Lamu East Pupils and students.

    Hon. Ruweida has launched door-to-door campaigns in search of all pupils and students who are in schools and those who have abandoned education to resume school as she has set a serious CDF Board committee tasked with reviewing the application process to ease the learning process.

    Lamu County, a constituency with Basuba, Kiunga, Siyu/Pate, Faza/Tchundwa, Kizingitini West, and Ndau Wards, has been marginalized and sidelined from development activities. Lamu East especially is known as the Centre for crime, hostage for Al-Shabaab bandits, and Centre for criminals from Somalia. Lamu town is just 5km away from the Somalia border.

    Through education, Mrs. Obo is determined to end marginalization issues terming that education is the through solution to end the root-cause factors of underdevelopment in Lamu East Constituency.

Captain Ruweida, they managed to tour Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Parliament buildings, Lamu PortSouth SudanEthiopiaTransport (LAPSSET) Corridor project, also known as the Lamu corridor which is a transport and infrastructure project in Kenya, and finally, the pupils got an exclusive chance to travel from Nairobi to Mombasa through Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to feel and explore new environments.

    In Lamu, the majority has not majored in education and through this system conveyed by Captain Ruweida is to eradicate banditry, poverty, and crimes and embrace education for change.

    During the Parliament procession, Hon. Captain vehemently encouraged young generations from Lamu to embrace education and put in more hard work to bring change in the region.

    “My children learn, the tour to our parliament buildings is a learning process, coming to see Nairobi City is a learning process, see the city’s development is because of education. Education is the key to success and development. When you go back, get knowledge to help you, education is the equalizer” Captain quotes.

    Challenges faced by Lamu learners, the recommendation process

    It is shocking that in Lamu East Constituency, during exam times the constituency suffers the most as Hon Ruweida affirmed that they have faced challenges of teachers teaching science subjects specifically Patte Girls Secondary School, the first-ever girls boarding secondary school in the often marginalized region which has missed chemistry teacher since its existence in 2019.

    “Patte Girls the first Girls Secondary school we’ve missed science teachers in Chemistry and biology, it’s high time to end this marginalization and create a conducive environment for our children to learn and improve the community” She asserted.

    Hon Ruweida has however confirmed that when local pupils and students go in search of education from other counties they perform excellently at all times.

    “Our students and pupils when they vacate and go to get an education outside Lamu perform absolutely and extremely high, some become most performing during exams.” Hon Captain says.

    Students lack model centers such as in Chandani Island.

    Lamu East being an island, logistics is very expensive as Ruweida affirms saying that conditions on the island are very high. She shockingly states that Lamu East Constituency has no single tarmac or even an inch of a tarmacked road.

    The area has lacked water for a long time. Through Constituency Development Funds (CDF) Captain has affirmed to put more efforts to transform the sectors by all means to ensure equality and inclusivity.

    Hon Ruweida has robbed for KERRA to get in touch and start the process of road maintenance and Murraming to pave way for the tarmacking process. She has stated that she will be the first Member of Parliament in Lamu East Constituency to bring into existence of a tarmacked road in the area.

    Hon. Ruweida has finally urged parents, clan leaders, and clan elders to help in search of pupils and students to make bursary applications to change the Constituency and produce more students with improved grades for the well-being of the community.
