  • RCS Messaging Traffic in East Africa set to hit a massive Growth by 2029 Infobip Report

RCS Messaging Traffic in East Africa set to hit a massive Growth by 2029 Infobip Report

Rich Communication Services (RCS) is poised to revolutionize messaging across Africa, with key markets such as Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda expected to witness a dramatic surge in usage.

According to a new whitepaper commissioned by global communications platform Infobip, RCS traffic in Africa and the Middle East is forecasted to grow by over 1300 Percent, climbing from 545 million messages today to a staggering 8 billion by 2029.

Data from tech analyst Omdia indicates that both Application-to-Person (A2P) and Person-to-Person (P2P) RCS traffic will experience substantial growth.

A2P RCS messaging, where businesses send messages directly to consumers, is predicted to expand from nearly 1.5 trillion messages in 2024 to more than 6 trillion messages by 2029, generating $4.2 billion in revenue. In the same period, P2P messaging will continue to grow, significantly contributing to the increasing volume.

RCS elevates traditional SMS, allowing Android users to send a range of rich media content, such as text, images, GIFs, videos, and more, using mobile data or Wi-Fi. Unlike WhatsApp, RCS messages do not require users to download a separate app, as messages are received in the same inbox as SMS and MMS.

With Apple’s adoption of RCS in its latest iOS 18 update, the service is set to achieve cross-platform reach, with Omdia estimating 2.5 billion monthly active users worldwide by the end of 2024.

The report highlights that regions such as the Americas and Asia & Oceania will lead the charge in A2P RCS traffic and revenue. However, Africa’s growth potential is clear, with RCS presenting a valuable opportunity for enterprises and mobile network operators to enhance customer engagement and drive business.

Charlotte Palfrey, Senior Analyst, Advanced Messaging and Communications at Omdia, said: “RCS offers significant benefits for enterprises and telcos. Enterprises should leverage Gen AI to enhance RCS experiences, making campaigns more personalized, engaging, and effective in driving conversion. At the same time, telcos must work with the messaging ecosystem to raise RCS awareness among enterprises and consumers. Additionally, telcos should utilize RCS internally for marketing and customer care functions to demonstrate RCS’s capabilities and benefits.”

Ivan Ostojic, Chief Business Officer at Infobip, said: “RCS has many benefits, and with the Apple upgrade, it now has universal availability. Consumers do not need to download a chat app to send and receive photos or videos. Meanwhile, enterprises can take consumers through the entire customer journey from initial marketing pitch to purchase and support. This is also a significant opportunity for telcos to seize the benefits of RCS Business Messaging and deliver rich conversational messaging for customers.”

Infobip enables enterprises and telcos to benefit from RCS Business Messaging through its Messaging-as-a-Platform (MaaP) service. Infobip’s MaaP solution providers messaging benefits, including throughput control, content, and spam control, while Infobip’s CPaaS offering enables connectivity with other Mobile Network Operators. Benefits include detailed billing and reporting, faster brand and partner approval, additional user control, and managed service options.

According to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK), of the 65.7 million mobile devices connected to networks, 34.5 million are smartphones – mostly Android, representing a penetration rate of 58.3%. In Uganda, data from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) shows 15.3 million mobile internet users, with smartphone uptake at 22%. Similarly, the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) reports smartphone penetration at 32.13%, with 35.8 million internet users. As RCS adoption accelerates, businesses across Africa are poised to benefit from richer, more interactive communication with their customers, driving enhanced engagement and new growth opportunities.

  • Africa Elite Men and Women Boxing Championships, Kinshasa, DR Congo, October 19-26

Africa Elite Men and Women Boxing Championships, Kinshasa, DR Congo, October 19-26

Kenya’s captain Liz Andiego is brimming with confidence ahead of the AFBC Africa Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships finals today, October 25, at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa.

The stakes are high, and Andiego has vowed to defeat Morocco’s Hasna Larti in their light-heavyweight duel. Larti is a rookie making her international debut but that’s not to say it’s going be a walk in the park for Andiego who is appearing in her second finals in the Africa Championships, the first time being in 2022 in Maputo where she lost to Morocco’s celebrated Khadija Mardi in the heavyweight final.

Larti is one of the 1O Moroccans in action in today’s finals with DR Congo having eight finalists to carry the fight to the Moroccans. Whether the hosts will dethrone the defending champions Morocco will be known after today’s schedule. In total, Morocco has 18 finalists and DR Congo has 14.

While Andiego had to dig deep in her reservoir of skill and experience to defeat DR Congo’s Joelle-Marie Mwika in the semi-finals, Larti made it to the finals without throwing a punch, a beneficiary of a bye.

She may be fresh for the fight but warhorse Andiego is not bothered.

“I’m going for gold, I don’t know anything about the Moroccan but will handle her,” says Liz who normally controls the ring with so much authority and confidence.

“I just want to thank my people in Kenya for their support, I couldn’t do this alone without their prayers. I can assure them the gold is coming home,” Andiego told me in an interview at the Belle Vie Hotel in Kinshasa.

“As the team captain, I’m leading by example together with our assistant captain Boni.”

Against Mwika, Andiego fought cautiously and refused to be drawn into close-quarter exchanges with the stronger Mwika who was beaten in last year’s finals of the same event by Morocco’s world champion Khadija Mardi.

“I used my experience, speed work, and footwork to beat Mwika since I know her very well, I’ve watched her severally in in the ring. Maximum respect to her she is a tough opponent.”

Newcomer Clinton Macharia is the other Kenyan boxer fighting today in the super-heavyweight division. He is also meeting a Moroccan opponent, Younes Bouhdid. Macharia, representing the national team for the first time, saw off Angola’s Luvo Jordilson in the semi-finals.

The Moroccans have been very impressive so far with a mixture of technical skills and daring approach in the ring.

Their star boxers, world bronze medalists Yasmine Mouttaki and Widad Bertal will lead the Moroccans from the front as they face DR Congo opponents in the final in their quest to win their second consecutive gold medals.

Mouttaki, the gold medal winner in the 2017 Africa Championships in Congo Brazzaville and last year in Yaounde is a smooth operator with plenty of experience in big-time boxing. She fights Carine Nkelani at light-flyweight

Showboating bantamweight defending champion Bertal meets Merveille Bisambu and is tipped to win her second consecutive gold medal in Africa’s premier boxing tournament.

DR Congo’s Mandela Cup welterweight champion Brigitte Mbabi finally steps into the ring for the first time when she battles Morocco’s Tooutir Mounir. Mbabi, one of the two boxers who represented DR Congo in the Paris Olympics, has a head start against the Moroccan newcomer who will feel the stinging punches of Lubumbashi-based Mbabi who received a bye to the finals.

Also fighting for the first time today are female lightweights, DR Congo’s Zalia Munga, and her neighbour within a shouting distance from  Congo Brazzaville, Sandrine Bakora. The two were the only entrants in the female lightweight category.

All in all, 28 boxers in 14 bouts will be in action in the first session of the Africa Championships finals to start later in the day followed by the second session tomorrow, October 26.

  • Senator Hamida Advocates for Dedicated Prayer Room for Muslim Students at Moi Girls’ High School

Senator Hamida Advocates for Dedicated Prayer Room for Muslim Students at Moi Girls’ High School

ODM nominated Senator Hamida Kibwana has sought a statement from the Committee on Education regarding the lack of a dedicated prayer facility for Muslim students at Moi Girls High School, Kibra Constituency in Nairobi City County, despite Christian students having a designated space for fellowships.

“Mr, Speaker, this issue raises concerns about religious inclusivity and equity in public institutions in the country. It is important to ensure that all students, regardless of their faith, have equal access to facilities that support their religious practices, as guaranteed by the Constitution” she stated.

The Committee has been tasked to report on the steps the Ministry of Education is taking to provide Muslim students at Moi Girls High School in Kibra Constituency with a dedicated prayer room, similar to the facility available for Christian students.

Hamida also wants the committee to clarify the Ministry’s policy on ensuring religious inclusivity and equal access to facilities for students of all faiths in public schools across the country. The committee should also provide a timeframe within which the Ministry will address this issue and ensure that Muslim students have a proper space for prayer and religious activities at the school.

The Lawmaker is seeking a Statement from the Committee on Health regarding the deplorable state of healthcare services at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Nairobi County.

The Senator stated that this situation raises serious concerns about patients’ dignity, safety, and well-being relying on the hospital for essential maternal and general healthcare services. It also highlights broader issues of inadequate healthcare infrastructure and staffing at the facility, which falls under the responsibility of the County Government of Nairobi.

In the Statement, the Committee should report on the extent of overcrowding and the strain on facilities at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, and provide a report on the noted constraints to service provision to Kenyans.

The committee should further outline the measures being taken by the County Government of Nairobi to

address the overcrowding, including immediate interventions and long-term plans to improve healthcare infrastructure and services at the hospital. Finally, the legislator wants the committee to clarify the steps being taken to ensure that patients are not unfairly charged for services they are unable to access due to current constraints; and recommend measures the National Government, through the Ministry of Health, can support the County Government in improving service delivery at Mama Lucy Hospital

A section of Members of the Committee led by its Chairperson Hon. Peter Lochakapong toured the region to establish progress on development projects which hold great socio-economic benefits for hundreds of families and greater residents of the region.

A second group visited the Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA) where they inspected the Kerio Roses Conservancy Project, initially a rose farm for exporting flowers that later evolved into a drought mitigation project.

Led by the leader of the delegation, Hon. Salah Farah Yakub, also visited Yokot and Etio Dam.

The Managing Director of KVDA, Mr. Sammy Naporos assured Committee Members that all dams will be completed by the end of January 2025.

Residents of Elgeyo Marakwet who are beneficiaries of KVDA projects hailed the Committee for what they termed advocating for funding North Rift Projects.

Speaking after meeting the Committee they reiterated the need for more funding to KVDA so as to expand its projects.

“KVDA has done a tremendous job to uplift the life of locals. We urge this Committee to increase the funding in the next financial year,” said one of the residents.

Members of the Committee led by Hon. Salah Yakubu allayed fears of disbanding Regional Development Authorities and assured locals that they would oppose proposals to disband the authorities. Members indicated that the regional development authorities have a great impact on local communities and must be left alone.

During the tour, the Committee also visited the Chebagon water pan serving 3,000 households in Marakwet East before visiting the Tot Mango processing factory in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

While in the Mombasa Region, the Committee toured the Boji Farmers Irrigation Project and the Wayu Boru Water Pan Project in Hola and Galole Constituencies, Tana River County.

Members established that the Boji Farmers Irrigation Project supports small-scale farmers in their agricultural pursuits though it was reported to be undergoing some challenges owing to the re-direction of its main water source which is River Tana.

The Ag. Managing Director of the Coast Development Authority, Ms. Pamela Maghera advised that the course of River Tana needs to be redirected to its course to revive the project.

The Wayu Boru Water Pan Project located in the Galole area is expected to harvest 12,000 cubic litres of surface water benefiting the residents who are currently struggling with acute water shortage.

Both delegations will be visiting other remaining development projects in the regions.

  • Rongai All Stars Queens Challenge Societal Norms with Tujiamini Win

Rongai All Stars Queens Challenge Societal Norms with Tujiamini Win

Rongai All Stars Queens have secured their status as rising stars in Kenya’s women’s football landscape after clinching the highly coveted Tujiamini Initiative Gold Award in the just-concluded South Rift Region nominations and entries.

Determined to break down barriers in competitive community football, the club secured a KES 500,000 cash award that will go towards kitting the club, acquiring new equipment, and improving their playing ground in Ongata Rongai in Kajiado County.

“Most of our players come from underprivileged backgrounds. Training at the club not only helps them develop their athletic skills, but also equips them adequately to make positive decisions like resisting and staying away from social ills like teen pregnancy, early marriages, and drug abuse among others,” said head coach Daniel Kyalo.

Established in 2013, Rongai All Stars Queens has made significant strides in women’s football. They began their journey in the National Super League and have developed into a powerhouse that continues to produce exceptional talent on the national and international stages.

Notable among these talents is Rebecca Odato, who currently plays for the National Under-17 side, and who recently made headlines with the Rising Starlets at the FIFA Under 17 Women’s World Cup. Additionally, founding player Rael Kamanda, who currently plays in the Kenya Women’s Premier League side, Zetech Sparks is another success story emerging from the club, showcasing the level of Talent and quality players being developed at the club.

“One of Tujiamini Initiatives’ goals is to uplift and provide equal opportunities for all Talent with a special focus on growing women’s participation in sport. Women’s football in Kenya holds rich untapped talent due to the lack of resources and exposure. Tujiamini seeks to bridge this gap while ensuring that excelling individuals receive the support they require to thrive and take their talents to the next level,” said Joseph Steventon – Head of Business Development, DBA Africa.

DBA Africa who have partnered with SportPesa in running the Tujiamini Initiative is a social enterprise dedicated to changing lives through sport with a to leverage the mental and physical benefits of sports to teach leadership, teamwork, resilience, and self-confidence to young people.

Rongai All Stars Queens’ head coach Kyalo, reiterated the importance of investing in Women’s football at the community level as one way of solidifying the talent pipeline that can feed into national and regional football leagues through constant competitions and appearance in various tournaments.

According to Kamanda who also won the Eastern and North Eastern Region Tujiamini Bronze award, winning the Tujiamini Gold Award is a big feat for the club that faces numerous challenges including playing resources and equipment among other stereotypes in the male-dominated sport.

“Initially, the Rongai All Stars Queens were a young team, facing apprehension from the community. It brings me immense joy to witness the team’s growth against all odds. I often played alongside the boys up until the ladies’ side was established. This experience provided me with valuable exposure, leading to my selection for the National Under-17 team in 2012 and eventually progressing to the premier league, where I continue to play,” said Kamanda.

In recent years, women’s football in Kenya has grown, driven by increased support and regular exposure through initiatives like Tujiamini. This momentum not only highlights the potential of female athletes but also reinforces the commitment to fostering an inclusive environment that empowers women in sports.

  • KEWOTA urge Government to boost TSC Budget-wise to hire more teachers

KEWOTA urge Government to boost TSC Budget-wise to hire more teachers

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on Wednesday said it received 314,117 applications for 46,000 advertised teacher posts between October 1 and 8.

TSC CEO Nancy Macharia, appearing before the Parliamentary Education Committee, said of these applications, 93,646 were for primary teacher posts against the 6,000 advertised, while 144, 177 were for junior secondary school (JSS) teachers against the 39,550 posts advertised.

TSC further received 76,294 applications for the 450 secondary school teacher posts it advertised, she told MPs.

In that vein, the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Women Teachers Association Benter Opande welcomed the move, urging that the move will address the current shortfall of the teacher-student ratio. She urged the government to increase budgetary allocation to the Teachers Service Commission for the employment of more teachers now that the facts have been laid bare by the TSC. This will improve the teacher-pupil ratio

“The teacher-student ratio in Kenya is a critical factor that impacts the quality of education. According to the Basic Education Statistical Booklet 2020, the current recommended teacher-student ratio is 1:25 for pre-primary schools, 1:40 for primary schools, and 1:35 for secondary schools. But that is not the case in some parts of the country dealing with a teacher-student ratio of as high as 1:70.

She also emphasized the importance of continuous training, capacity building, and retooling of teachers, especially on ICT demands on innovative ways of teaching to make the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) a success.

She concluded by underscoring the need for government intervention to improve the infrastructure in schools and the government to seek partners to ensure the CBC program is sustainable.

  • MP Nguna (CNN) Opposes Proposal to Extend Term Limits for Elected Leaders

MP Nguna (CNN) Opposes Proposal to Extend Term Limits for Elected Leaders

    BY Steve El Sabai

Mwingi West Mp, Charles Ngusya Nguna, has firmly expressed his opposition to a recent legislative proposal aimed at extending the term limits of elected leaders in Kenya.

Speaking during a public event in his constituency, Nguna reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the Kenyan Constitution and maintaining the integrity of the country’s democratic principles.

The proposal, which has sparked a national debate, seeks to amend the Constitution to allow for the extension of the terms of elected officials, including the president, governors, and MPs, beyond the current two-term limit.

Proponents argue that the extension would allow leaders to complete long-term projects and offer stable governance, especially in times of crisis. However, critics, including Nguna, view the move as a potential threat to democracy, accountability, and leadership renewal.

Nguna stated, “I will not support any proposal to extend the term limits for elected leaders. Our Constitution was crafted with the interests of the people in mind, and it ensures that leadership is temporary, and accountable, and provides opportunities for fresh ideas to take root. We must respect our good Constitution and the will of the people.”

The MP’s sentiments resonate with a growing section of Kenyans who have voiced concerns over what they see as an attempt to erode the democratic gains made since the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution. The Constitution, which introduced a two-term limit for the presidency and other elective positions, was seen as a landmark achievement in promoting political accountability and avoiding the excesses of extended rule often seen in other African nations.

Nguna further emphasized that leaders should focus on delivering results within their current terms instead of seeking to elongate their stay in power.

“The Kenyan people have entrusted us with a mandate to serve for a specific period. Our responsibility is to work diligently within that timeframe and deliver on the promises we made. Seeking to extend our terms suggests that we are more interested in personal gain than public service.”

His remarks come at a time when various political leaders across the country are positioning themselves for the 2027 general elections, with some lobbying for constitutional changes that could affect both term limits and the structure of government.

Nguna’s stance has been widely praised by civil society organizations and political analysts who believe that the constitutional limits are crucial for maintaining a healthy democracy.

By standing against this proposal, Nguna joins a growing number of leaders who are advocating for the protection of democratic institutions and the rule of law in Kenya. As the debate continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether the proposal will gain sufficient traction in Parliament. For now, however, Nguna’s declaration sends a clear message: Kenya’s Constitution should be respected, and attempts to alter its key provisions will face significant opposition from those determined to uphold the democratic values it embodies.

  • Fay Bistro in Kilimani, indefinite shut down due to Noise Violation Complaints

Fay Bistro in Kilimani, indefinite shut down due to Noise Violation Complaints

EnvironmentCS, Aden Duale announced the club’s closure after accusations of rampant noise.

In a statement seen by Kenyaleo.co.ke, Duale directed the National Environment Management Agency(NEMA) Director General and the agency’s police officers to visit the club and enforce the ban.

‘’I have ordered the immediate closure of Fay’s Bistro club in Kilimani, Nairobi, for noise violations.  The NEMA Director General, accompanied by the NEMA Police unit, is on-site to enforce the closure,’’ Duale stated.

NEMA DG, Mamo Mamo voiced his concern, ‘’The authority draws your attention to the numerous improvement notices served to you including the improvement notices dated 19th, June 2024 and 14th August 2024 and inspection by NEMA environment inspectors following numerous complaints on varied dates reported by the general public regarding noise pollution from the operation of your business hence denying neighboring fraternity the right to a clean and healthy environment as enshrined in Article 42 of the constitution and section 3 of the environment management and coordination act of 1999.’’

The club became a subject of social media discussions after Nairobi County Environment Chief Officer Geofrey Moisira was blocked in a video seen circulating all over the social media handles by an alleged owner when he went to intervene following an uproar from adjacent residents according to the officer claiming that there have been continuous complaint reports.

CS Duale has been previously and recently been persistent in sounding warnings to other clubs within residential areas that are notorious for noise disturbances.

He added that their impunity would not be tolerated.

‘’Let this serve as a stern warning to all clubs operating in residential areas: any that continue to play loud music will face the same action. This impunity will not be tolerated!’’

Moisira, in a video clip is seen saying that residents in the surrounding area had lodged complaints with his office over noise pollution that emanated from the club, making it hard for them to sleep at night.

‘’These neighbors have been complaining and I decided to come in person to witness for myself. If you check it’s already midnight and the decibels are almost 80, that is too loud,’’ Moisiria insists.

He adds, ‘’The owner has been saying that we are against them, let’s go tell them to switch off so that the neighbors can sleep.’’

In the same shared clip, Mosiria arrived with the media contingents to document and record the series of events and when he arrived at the entrance to the club, he was met by a hostile lady who tried to hide her face nor would neither listen to him nor allow him to gain entry, claiming that the County Officer was doing wrong to record his entry.

The recently transferred Chief officer from the Health sector to the Environment has been caught in push-and-pull wars with the City from Hospitals and now club owners and churches, construction sites, and now especially those within residential areas that play loud music when people are asleep.

The recent move of Mosiria where he faced a hostile environment is when he pushed into Quiver Lounge Kilimani causing it to completely ban loud music playing in a loud-press release shared the following day.

Duale’s move to order the shutdown of the club could potentially raise eyebrows over what could likely be interpreted as stepping in on the roles of the county government.

CS Duale has consistently been sending warnings on the same after the issue escalated which touches his ministry.

  • Malindi Airport Named Overall Winner at KAA Airport Service Quality Awards

Malindi Airport Named Overall Winner at KAA Airport Service Quality Awards

Malindi Airport has been honored as the Overall Winner at the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards, celebrated during a prestigious ceremony at the Ocean Beach Resort and Spa in Malindi on Thursday.

This accolade underscores the airport’s steadfast commitment to exceptional customer service and operational excellence.

The KAA ASQ Awards, launched last year, seeks to recognize outstanding performance among KAA-managed airports. The awards are based on a comprehensive Service Quality survey conducted across nine airports, with Malindi Airport achieving an impressive Overall Satisfaction score of 3.86 out of a possible 5.0. This score reflects the airport’s dedication to enhancing the passenger experience across several key areas, including facility quality, staff motivation, passenger processing efficiency, ambiance, cleanliness, and retail offerings.

The program is rooted in consumer feedback gathered through the Airport Service Quality Surveys. This feedback allows airports to strategically plan product improvements and promote local service quality. The benchmarking program is facilitated through quarterly ASQ surveys conducted at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Moi International Airport (MIA), alongside internal ASQ surveys performed bi-annually across all KAA-managed airports.

In addition to recognizing overall excellence, this year marked the introduction of the Environmental Sustainability Award. This new category promotes efficient resource use and encourages practices that mitigate noise and air pollution while supporting biodiversity through afforestation and effective waste management.

While commenting on the initiative, KAA’s Acting Managing Director, Henry Ogoye, noted “Our strategic objectives aim to elevate customer experience to an average index of 4.3 out of 5.0, a target we are determined to achieve through innovation and excellence in service delivery. Our internal KAA-ASQ Program complements this vision by cultivating a competitive spirit among our airports and driving us toward service excellence.”

“As we look forward, let us challenge ourselves to exceed expectations and set new benchmarks for the global aviation industry. Together, with unity of purpose and clarity of vision, we will not only achieve our Corporate Customer Satisfaction Index target but also inspire others within the aviation sector.” Ogoye added.

    Other notable winners.

    1. Most Enjoyable Airport: Kisumu International Airport

    2. Cleanest Airport: Eldoret International Airport

    3. Most Dedicated Staff: Lamu-Manda Airport

    4. Most Improved Airport: Moi International Airport 5. Environmental Sustainability Award: Manda Airport.

As KAA continues to prioritize customer satisfaction, it remains dedicated to fostering an environment where feedback is valued and used for continuous improvement. The ASQ Awards are part of broader initiatives that include other programs such as the KAA Mystery Shopping Awards and the Aviation Business Excellence Awards (ABEA), all aimed at rewarding high-performing airport staff and businesses.

This recognition not only celebrates individual airport achievements but also highlights KAA’s commitment to enhancing service delivery across its facilities, setting a benchmark for excellence in Kenya’s aviation sector.
