  • Over 1,000 students to get breakfast in school for one year through Prudential’s donation to Cup of Uji’s School Feeding Programme

Over 1,000 students to get breakfast in school for one year through Prudential’s donation to Cup of Uji’s School Feeding Programme

    ·      Prudential has donated Kshs. 2.7 million to support Cup of Uji’s School Feeding initiatives

    ·      The donation will support the preparation of over 270,000 cups of porridge for disadvantaged school children.

    ·      The contribution is part of Prudential’s goal of addressing education and health challenges to make communities resilient to life’s risks.

    ·      Cup of Uji targets to reach 100,000 students, across the country by the end of 2024

Prudential, through its community investment arm, Prudence Foundation, has today handed over a Kshs. 2.7 million cheque to Cup of Uji, an organization that supports school feeding programs in Kenya.

The donation, presented at the Riruta HGM Primary School in the country’s capital, Nairobi, is part of Prudential’s objective of promoting the education of children in Kenya, and will facilitate a healthy breakfast daily for 1,000 students over a period of 12 months.

With a cost of KSh10 for a cup of nutritious porridge, Prudential’s contribution will support the preparation of at least 270,000 cups, helping to retain and improve the academic success of children from needy families in school.

“We are heavily invested in boosting the school-completion rate in Kenya, and we know that school feeding programs are critical in reducing the dropout rate. We have been following Cup of Uji’s work, and we are sure that our support will create lasting impact,” Prudential Kenya’s Chief Executive Officer, Gwen Kinisu, said at the handover ceremony.

Cup of Uji Founder, Francis Amonde, added: “Prudential’s generous donation will provide a meal to over 1,000 school going children struggling with inadequacies back home. The support we have received today will enable us to serve them for many school-going days.” Cup of Uji targets to reach 100,000 students by the end of 2024.

The organization currently serves 10,173 children from 11 primary schools across five counties.

Studies by the World Food Programme indicate that children who go to school hungry struggle to concentrate and learn. The World Bank adds that enhanced nutrition and health can result in improved academic performance and a decrease in dropout rates.

“There is consistent proof that school feeding improves enrollment and attendance, resulting in better academic performance and improves cognitive performance. Additionally, it helps curb malnutrition among school-going children and offers a regular source of nutrients essential for the mental and physical development of young children.” Said Ms. Kinisu.

It is against this backdrop that Prudential continually looks for opportunities to support quality nutrition standards in communities like those reached by Cup of Uji.

“Some of our students come from really needy families, where even one meal a day is a privilege, but programmes like Cup of Uji help provide the relief that is required to keep them in school. We are really pleased that Prudential has come out to provide even more support, which, I can confirm will help us see more of our students graduate,” said Rose Omollo, a teacher at Riruta HGM Primary School.

The donation to Cup of Uji adds on Prudential’s investment in education, which also includes full scholarships for 185 high school students, offered in partnership with the Kenya Education Fund (KEF).

  • Network launched to intensify cybersecurity awareness in Africa

Network launched to intensify cybersecurity awareness in Africa

With cybercrime becoming rampant in Africa, cybersecurity awareness promoters across the continent have joined hands to help Africans stay safe online through public education.

The African Cybersmart Network was launched last week in Nairobi, Kenya to facilitate capacity building and collaboration between cybersecurity awareness promoters in the continent.
The launch happened on the sidelines of the 2023 Digital Rights and Inclusion Forum, an annual 3-day multi-stakeholder forum for discussions on digital policy issues in Africa.
Speaking during the launch event, the Lead Coordinator of the African Cybersmart Network, David Moepeng stated that the network was formed following a realisation that, as Africa increasingly becomes digitalized, internet users on the continent are becoming exposed to various forms of cyberattacks, particularly cybercrime.

According to Moepeng, who is a qualified Cyberpsychologist and works as a Cybersecurity Awareness Specialist at Cybersmart Botswana, the vulnerability of Africans to cyberattacks is exacerbated by rampant risky online behaviors and practices.

“These behaviors include oversharing of private and personal information on social media platforms, responding to phishing messages and other forms of online scams, use of weak passwords, risky web browsing which usually happens when people visit unsecured websites or click on links from strangers, which often leads to malware attacks and hacking”, Moepeng pointed out.

The African Cybersmart Network has therefore been formed to intensify public education and promote safe online behaviors by facilitating capacity building through training, collaboration and knowledge exchange between cybersecurity awareness promoters as well as resource mobilization for public education campaigns.

In its 2023 African Cyberthreat Assessment Report, Interpol noted that cybercriminals were having no limits in terms of sharing resources and know-how, which is in part what allows them to thrive.

The International Criminal Police Organization advised that, by the same token, communities and societies needed to bind themselves closer together via the exchange of information to effectively curb cybercrime.

“In order to reduce the impact of cybercrime and protect communities for a safer world, society must stay abreast of new trends and develop innovative means of responding to them. Doing this in a timely fashion will discourage possible criminal activity and dissuade potential perpetrators in advance”, stated the Interpol report.

For her part, the East Africa Coordinator of the African Cybersmart Network, Jackline Njagi Lidubwi, said membership to the network is open to non-profit organisations in Africa that are running programmes and campaigns to educate societies about cyber threats.

She noted that, the commonality of cyber threats across African borders requires similar techniques, hence a decision to bring Africa together to counter cyber-attacks as one.

Lidubwi added that member organisations will benefit from regular training programmes meant to ensure that public education programmes in the continent stay up to date with the ever evolving trends in cyber threats.

  • Super Metro Now available in Kahawa West Route

Super Metro Now available in Kahawa West Route

Leading public service vehicle company Super Metro is expanding its route network with Kahawa West entry in Nairobi.

The Sacco said in a statement that it has acquired a 100-bus fleet that will be distributed on all of its routes.

“Today we officially commenced our services in Kahawa West,” it said earlier.

“Our main aim is to serve our esteemed clients better,” it added.

Super Metro has become a popular PSV for passengers in Nairobi for its strict observance of traffic rules and regulations in an industry that is dominated by unruliness.

Only in February did the transportation firm unveil its first fleet of electric buses as the company transitioned to eco-friendly vehicles.

The Sacco’s electric vehicles ply the Central Business District (CBD)-Kitengela, CBD-Kikuyu, and CBD-Ngong routes.

The electric vehicles were acquired by Sacco in a partnership with BasiGo, an electronic bus company that seeks to provide environmentally friendly transport solutions on the African continent.

The model acquired by Super Metro is a K6, a 25-seat electric bus with a 250-kilometer range and less than four hours of recharge time.

However Super Metro Chairman Mr. Nelson Nduki noted that there is resistance from other Saccos who have hired goons to disrupt operations by stoning their buses despite having been licensed by NTSA.
