  • Government Receives Additional Covid-19 Vaccines

The government has received 1.36 million doses of Pfizer vaccines from the United States government. The vaccines were received by Ministry of Health officials led by the chair of the national task force on vaccines against Covid-19 Dr. Willis Akhwale. Also present at the airport were United States Embassy officials led by Ms. Heidi O’bra, Deputy Director, USAID/Kenya, Office of Health, Population, and Nutrition.

While thanking the US government for the donation Dr. Akhwale said the vaccines will be distributed to the nine regional stores countrywide.“The donation will ensure everyone has an equal access to the vaccines and they are safe,” said Dr. Akhwale.

Dr. Akhwale pointed out that there are ongoing discussions with development partners to get more Moderna vaccines in the country so that there are enough doses of the five compliments being used in the country. He further noted that the government hopes to fully vaccinate 19 million people by end of June this year.

“During the same period, we have targeted to vaccinate 2.9 million teenagers between 15 and 17 years. We are also targeting 4.2 million Kenyans who are fully vaccinated to receive their booster shots by December 2022,” Dr. Akhwale.

The 1.36 million doses of Pfizer vaccines were donated to Kenya by the United States government.

He noted that the Ministry of Health guidelines advise that booster shots are to be taken six months after having been fully vaccinated.

Dr. Akhwale said records indicate that 370,000 people are eligible for booster shots this month. These he said are mainly frontline workers who include health workers, security forces, teachers, and those in the hospitality industry who received their second doses in June last year.

He said booster shots are important because the pandemic is not yet over and science has shown that the immunity wanes six months after the second dose.

He warned that one is likely to be hospitalized if attacked by the virus and urged those eligible for booster shots to take advantage of the many vaccines to get their jab. He announced beginning this Friday the government will launch another vaccination campaign targeting 3 million people.

Dr. Akhwale said there are enough vaccines for everyone and those who get severe attacks as a result of being unvaccinated will only have themselves to blame.

  • Kenneth Kinara Nyamwamu, Incoming Governor Nairobi County

Kenneth Kinara Nyamwamu, Incoming Governor Nairobi County

Meet Mr. Kenneth Kinara Nyamwamu: A Kenyan nurse and data analyst in the US, a philanthropist back home.

Mr Kenneth Kinara Nyamwamu, born and bred in Omosasa in Bomachoge Constituency, Kisii County spent a significant period of his youthful years in Nairobi before moving to the US, Ken’s heart is still strongly anchored in Kenya.

He is always in Nairobi, visiting young people, mentoring groups and showing them the way to self-sustainability .his trips to Kenya is not what only caught my eyes, but his passion for Nairobi’s informal settlements is what made me want to interview him. For the past few years, Ken as they famously call him has made numerous trips empowering women and young people sharing his stories of success, his journey and helping them to start livelihood activities that will help families make a living and their lives in the city more bearable. Asked why this specific demography he said “Most people in the informal settlement leave on hope and the regimes seem to neglect them, while politicians see them as a number for political expedience. That leaves them at the mercy of their God and well-wishers. That is why am passionate and feel that we can make a change if this population are actively involved in the development of the city”

But it’s Ken’s touch with the happenings back home that would catch your attention. He is fully aware and engaged in the political, and socio-economic challenges that an ordinary Kenyan has to contend with on daily basis. Appreciatingly, Nyamwamu is no stranger to the hardships of growing up in Kenya and the cyclical limitations. To begin with, Ken, like many other children in typical Kenyan homes was born in a polygamous family. His father had two wives and 17 children in total.

Ken had 8 siblings born to his mother and 9 brothers and sisters born to his step-mother. Right there was a mouthful. From the onset, being raised within such a huge family setting meant limited resources. The entire family depended on his father’s meagre earnings as a school teacher and later an education officer.

But as expected from a teacher, his father was a hard worker and valued education. By what Ken describes as purely God’s grace and his father’s sheer determination, all of Nyamwamu’s 17 siblings were educated to a bachelor’s degree level.

As an education officer, Kenneth’s father was instrumental in the implementation of the 8.4.4 system particularly in the Nyanza region. Ken’s other memorable and what he sees as a benefit of being a teacher’s kid is that the family lived in different parts in Nyanza notably Kisii, Homabay, Siaya and Migori—whenever a school transfer called in. This made Ken and his siblings appreciate life from different contexts and lenses. Notably, learning to adapt to different settings and embrace diversity.

    Early Education
For his early education, Kenneth schooled in Siaya. Later he joined the prominent St Mary’s School, Yala. The same high school that his father had attended. While Ken performed well in his academics, it was his talent in different sports that would chart a path for him sooner than later. In high school, he played for the Kenya Team in sports such as basketball, badminton, hockey and taekwondo.

After high school, he was admitted to Survey of Kenya where he stayed for two years. He remained very active in sports and joined the Kenya Commercial Bank Sports Club where he played taekwondo, basketball and badminton. While Kenneth was exemplary in the three sports, the head coaches pushed him to choose one sport and he settled for badminton—a sport that allowed him to play in the national team.

It was while working for KCB that he received his visa to go play and compete in the United States. This was Ken’s eureka moment. With the most coveted US visa in his hands and the opportunity to compete in the US Open in badminton, Nyamwamu’s life journey took a turn for the better. That opportunity marks Ken’s journey in the US where he has been living since 2001.
    Higher Education and Career

While Ken’s talent in sports is the key that opened his door to the American dream, he never shunned his need for education. Nyamwamu enrolled on a college in the US where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and later proceeded to study a Master’s degree in Data Analytics.

Interestingly, Ken is also a registered nurse in America and currently works as a nursing professional at Henry Ford Hospital in the US. He is also a consultant in big data analytics.
    Footprint in Kenya

However, it’s Ken’s frequent travels back home and his connection with friends and former classmates that is most to be admired. It would be difficult to single out Ken from a group of friends enjoying nyama choma and our usual Kenyan drinks on a Saturday afternoon. The guy, who speaks fluent Swahili, Kisii and sheng—including the latest lingo, might seem and sound like he never left this country.

If you are a keen listener as I am, You will also appreciate his contribution to conversations around politics and the country’s state of the economy. In between the jokes of the day, Ken will interject with a serious issue. On this particular day, he has invited some close friends and the conversation is about linking small and medium business people in Nairobi with funding opportunities in the US.

According to Ken, the first step in empowering people is sharing information and not necessarily dishing out money. He notes, “if we are really committed to better the lives of our people, let us be honest in how we offer help.

The main thing is to empower individuals and by large our communities. Sharing enabling information such as where are the opportunities, linkages and how can they position themselves to leverage on such is key.”

Mr. Nyamwamu has demonstrated a keen interest in the plight of the young people, which he notes if well managed are our country’s greatest asset. As part of philanthropic initiatives, Ken has been supporting projects around youth empowerment through education and sports.

In collaboration with friends and partners, he has facilitated mentorship training, scholarships and supported prize giving events for primary schools. As an accomplished sportsperson, Kenneth has been instrumental in identifying and supporting budding talents through sponsoring and participating in sports tournaments.

From my general interactions with Ken, I also get to learn that he has established many business networks and acquaintances in Nairobi, Kisii and many other parts in Kenya and abroad.

In addition, Ken has invested in various sectors in Nairobi ranging from real estate to transport. According to Ken, his personal investments are only as much of value as the impact they bring in the lives of other people. To this end, many Nairobi residents have found employment opportunities and gainful means of livelihood from such investments.

  • Lucky escape for four Thika children after 16 hrs kidnap ordeal

Police in Thika East Sub County are investigating an alleged kidnapping incident of four children in the Gatuanyaga area on Sunday evening.

The children aged between seven and 11 years who later managed to escape on Monday morning were allegedly abducted while playing outside their residence at around 2pm2 pm before they were sprayed with a sleeping dose and bundled into a car.

The two boys and two girls detailed how they were blindfolded and their mouths, hands and, legs tied up, put into a car, and driven for about four kilometers before they were bundled into an abandoned small room near Makongeni estate where they found three other children.

According to one of the children, she woke up hours later and saw the room with two windows, one of which had been covered with a piece of iron sheet nailed to it.

“I managed to kick it off, woke the other children and we ran away. It was a terrifying 16-hour experience,” she told the press yesterday.

According to a guardian of two of the children Catherine Karongo, the children went missing from 2 pm on Sunday and came home at 9am9 am yesterday.

She said they reported the matter to the police on Sunday evening and together with residents, began a manhunt for the four, but did not succeed.

“It was on Monday when while on our manhunt, we received a call that the children had returned home. We felt relieved after a long and difficult experience. They came back terrified and traumatized,” said Karongo.

Area Deputy Sub-county police commander Muthee Nyaga confirmed the incident saying investigations are underway. He cautioned parents to be vigilant about their children’s safety.

“Investigations are underway and everyone responsible will be put to justice.  We condemn the incident and call on parents to be responsible for their children’s safety while at home,” he said.

Residents led by Cecilia Wamaitha, a local leader raised concern over the increased insecurity cases in the area with several kidnapping and gruesome murders being reported in the area over the past year.

In April, a boy was murdered and his badly mutilated body dumped in a thicket as he took his father’s phone for battery charging in a nearby shop. In August, a man was murdered and his body skinned and in September, a man from Ngong’ was murdered by residents after he slaughtered his wife in a car in the same Gatuanyaga area.

“This has turned into a death zone. We appeal to the police to heighten security because we live in fear,” said Wamaitha.

  • Raila will win 2022 polls, OKA has no chance CS Wamalwa

Defense Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has expressed optimism that ODM leader Raila Odinga will form the next government.

Wamalwa says the former Prime Minister stands a better chance to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta under the Azimio la Umoja movement even as he brushed aside the prospects of One Kenya Alliance (OKA) in the August 2022 poll.

“Let no one lie to you that OKA will form a government. In Kenya, we only have two horses. It’s between Raila and (Deputy President William) Ruto.” he said

According to Wamalwa ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi and his Ford Kenya counterpart Moses Wetangula are wasting time pushing for an alternative force in next year’s elections. He urged them to decide on who to back to before it’s too late.

“Our brothers cannot continue sitting on the fence. I told Musalia and Wetangula if they continue sitting on the fence, our people will be out of the government. Our people want to be part of the government under Azilio la Umoja spearheaded by Raila Odinga.” charged the CS

He said the recently-launched Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K) will work with like-minded parties in Azimio la Umoja coalition.

Wamalwa spoke when he, alongside DAP-K Party leader Wafula Wamunyinyi received 7 MCAs from Trans Nzoia county and 4 MCAs from Bungoma county who defected from Wetangula’s Ford Kenya.

“This is a new beginning. The team you just saw here heralds a new start to our region and the politics of Western Kenya. We had Ford Kenya. Today we decided to come here to tell you we are moving away from the stagnation that is in Ford Kenya so that we can walk towards better things.” He said

The CS further confirmed that the party will be fronting Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya for the Trans Nzoia gubernatorial seat in next year’s poll.

Deputy President William Ruto has told President Uhuru Kenyatta to face him directly and stop hiding behind junior government officers.

In a statement, Ruto urged Uhuru to come out boldly, and stop using junior government officers to attack him over his 2022 presidential bid.

Ruto is said not to be satisfied with how President Kenyatta has been conducting himself since the handshake with ODM Leader Raila Odinga.

And according to Ruto’s statement, Uhuru should come out and reveal his true colors, instead of hiding behind some nonentities.

“Let the Dynasties and Deep State unveil themselves so that we can meet face to face. They should stop involving their officers in this battle. Yes, it is a battle between me, and them,” Ruto avers.

A statement by Deputy President says that President Uhuru Kenyatta has been fighting Ruto using senior government officials to diminish his political ambitions ahead of the 2022 General Elections.
